Oriental Africa Campaign commemorative medal. Bronze, attractive design with cut-out details. Medal for the Mothers (or widows) of the Fallen. Medal is much like the type "A" in Brambilla's book # 588, except for the hallmark which appears to be interlaced letters LCM? Perhaps Lorioli & Castelli Milan. A Medal with this exact mark is not featured in Brambilla. He does mention that medal was extended for those whose sons/husbands fought in Oriental Africa and Greek/Albanian Campaign during WW2. It is definitely not 1956 revision (Brambilla # 869) as reverse was slightly different in those (inscription and foliage). Original ribbon. 32.5mm dia. All in great condition. Item # Ita-225. (95) |
$95.00 | |
Italy-War Medal 1915-1918. Awarded for participation in the World War 1. Around the rim is the text "CONIATA 'NEL BRONZO NEMICO" ('made from enemy bronze'). Designer's name on obverse: S. Canevari. Complete with original ribbon. This is the harder to find type with M.Nelli Inc. (marked beneath the bust) being the maker. Also, 2 bars present (1916, 1917) are of importance as year font is vertical! These are probably the rarest of all bar types! Usual bars have the '10 o'clock' orientation of numerals. Some sources speculate that these were made abroad but no details are apparent. Medal and bars show age and wear, as does the ribbon. Great piece for discerning collector. Item # Ita-224. (135) |

Below are several Fascist Youth badges of distinction. The organization was founded just months after Mussolini's march on Rome in 1922 with the first group of boys ranging from ages 8 to 14. They were called "Balilla" after a heroic young boy from Genoa, Italy. During the Austrian occupation of the city in 1746, he sparked a riot against the invading troops by throwing the first stone at a rolling cannon. Eventually, a huge riot and mass uprising led to the Austrians' withdrawal from the city. The youth organization was divided into age groups: Balilla (8- 11 yrs.); Balilla Musketeers (11-14 yrs.); Vanguard (14-16 yrs.); and Vanguard Musketeers (16-18 yrs.). Mandatory service in the armed forces followed. The Fascist Youth organization was called "Gioventu Italiana Del'Littorio" meaning The Fascist Youth of the Lictors (commonly referred to as GIL). |

Medal of Saint Maurice. It is closely linked with the Order of St. Maurice and Lazarus. Originally the medal was founded by King Carlo Alberto in 1838 and meant only for officers who were already Knights of the St. Maurice/Lazarus Order and were still performing military duties (for 50 years). Original awards were in solid gold. There were 2 sizes: 55mm for commanding officers (worn around the neck) and 39mm for lower rank officers (worn on breast). During WW1, awarding was temporarily suspended. In 1924, a new Royal decree re-instituted the award, but in gilt bronze from Austrian cannons taken during the War. Originally, medals had dark patina which in turn was changed to lighter gilding. Also the number of years served in order to receive the award was reduced to 10 along with slight reduction in size. Example here is of the larger type with original ribbon. Higher grade of the award (to commanding officers) - 50mm in diameter. Gilding rather nice. This is the pre-Republic (1943/44) award as reverse inscription reads: Al Cavaliere Mauriziano' (these lines were omitted on the Republican pieces). Medal by: 'Alberti'. Very good condition, just slight wear to centre. Very interesting and rarely offered piece. Item # Ita 32. *SOLD* |
