Military Order of Saint Ferdinand, award for officers - also called the Cross of Swords

NEW! Military Order of Saint Ferdinand, award for officers - also called the Cross of Swords. This class is one of the least awarded in the system of the order and was issued (with or without wreath) as highest award for gallantry in Spain. This delicate decoration is in silver and marked 'JM', belonging to well known order maker, Jose Medina. It is also hallmarked for Spanish silver. This in itself is rare and would fall into the very late period of awarding of this class - probably at the very end of the Monarchy period, when such awards became rather obscure. 65mm x 63mm. Shows age and light wear but no enamel damage. Complete with original pin and catch for fastening. Item # Sp-98 (595)

Medalla de Distinción de Hostalrich Defense of Hostalrich 1810 medal

NEW! Defense of Hostalrich 1810 medal (Medalla de Distinción de Hostalrich) . The French siege of the city lasted between January 13 and May 12. Medals were crafted and engraved locally, intended firstly for the officers and troops of the city of Hostalrich and secondly for the members of the Almansa Infantry Regiment. According to the best research on the subject (see: A.Prieto Barrio, Compendio legislativo de ordenes, medallas y condecoraciones) - 80 gold medals were shaped in Tarragona and 23 were taken to Majorca to be engraved and distributed among the officers of the Almansa infantry regiment. Captain-General of Catolonian Army, Juan Manuel de Villena intended to award the medals but purportedly lost them all!! Some 934 Silver medals for the other ranks were made and awarded between 1810 and 1816 (some sources indicate even much later awardings). According to O'Donnel (ARTECHE, Volume VIII, 1893) - four slightly different looking types of these medals were made. Of the gold medals, no single original issue example is known to have survived.

The silver medals of the first original issue (1810) - such one offered here - only few are known to still exist. One such example is housed in the Spanish National Army Museum.

The silver medal measures 27.3mm x 31.4mm (including fixed suspension eye). All details hand engraved and extremities fitted with ball tips. Suspension eye is also soldered/fitted (where as later examples purportedly used 'O' ring through the drilled hole). Medal shows age and wear, details are still excellent. Small piece of original period ribbon remains. It would be borderline impossible to find better example of this particular medal. Item # Sp-95 (1850).

Spain Medalla de distinción. MONTEJURRA 1873. Plata
1873 Cross for the Battle of Montejurra for Officers (silvered) (Cruz por la Batalla de Montejurra - plata). Carlist Wars awards are quite interesting and not commonly found (some very rare). The First Battle of Montejurra occured on the 7-9 November of 1873, after very heavy fighting Carlist forces defended their stronghold of Estella in the Navarre region. Cross in silvered metal and with original watermarked ribbon. Purportedly, these were made in Austria. Silver 'grade' crosses are considerably difficult to find. Ref. Calvo Pasqual fig.332. Very good quality and condition, shows slight wear (small scratches etc.). Item # Sp-91 *SOLD*

Officer's 'Ifni Sahara' decoration. All original, crown suspension - ribbon and mounting clasp. Multi-piece construction. Fantastic enamels and very attractive design. All enamels intact. 32mm x 52mm. Great condition. Bit of history behind this medal. Ifni was ceded by Morocco to Spain in 1860, but Spanish administration was nominal until 1934; from then until 1958 its capital, Sidi Ifni, was the residence of the governor-general of Spanish Sahara (now Western Sahara). Border clashes between Spanish and Moroccan troops occurred in 1957 and all was over in 1958. Not many issued to officers. Item # Sp-90 *SOLD*

1875 Medal of Alfonso XII for Military Distinction (Valor - Disciplina - Lealtad). Most interesting private purchase bar for the dual action at 'Gueataria - Cantabria

1875 Medal of Alfonso XII for Military Distinction (Valor - Disciplina - Lealtad). Most interesting private purchase bar for the dual action at 'Gueataria - Cantabria'. According to the reference book (J.L.Calvo Pascual fig.210), these were Naval engagements. Bar is also a clasp with pin/catch fastener and it appears to be hand engraved. This is an unusual departure from the normal buckle suspension and thin pressed bars. Medal appears to be silver (or plated), shows age and some wear. It is of the rarely encountered manufacture - Castells in Barcelona (that would be Genaro Castells). The name is faintly seen on the reverse in raised letters, 'Barcelona' is only partial. This in itself is an interesting issue since G.Castells was a Carlist sympathizer.  Ribbon definitely appears to be of age and it shows wear, there are number of pulls and it is fragile in spots. Would make for an interesting addition to your Spanish medal collection. Standard bars for these particular actions are some of the rarest approved. Medal measures 34mm in diameter. Item # Sp-89 *SOLD*

Spanish Red Cross Order french made
Red Cross Merit Order 1st class. Royal period, most likely 2nd type (after 1894). Most beautiful example, multi part construction of French manufacture. Punch mark of A. Chobillon on the eye, also French silver fineness hallmark (head of wild boar), most likely of WW1 or Spanish American War vintage. Erronous inscription: 'IN HOC SIGNO VINCES' (should be 'In hoc signo Salus') which is probably synonymous with this particular manufacturer. Quality is considerably better then Spanish-made pieces we've handled to date. Original ribbon. 39mm wide, 65mm high (to tip of crown).Slight cracking to the white enamel (not chipped) and some wear marks - otherwise condition is very good. Gilding is of exceptional quality. Multi part construction Item #Rdc-137 (258)

Spanish Morocco Order of Mehdauia, Grand Cross breast star in silver gilt
Order of Mehdauia, Grand Cross breast star in silver gilt. Most superb quality, manufactured in Italy circa 1930's - early 1940s. It bears manufacturer's punch mark (struck to the pin) along with the plaque of the distributor, "E. Gardino in Rome". Very fine in appearance, condition is very good with slight flaking to the centre (pearl sky above the sun). Rendition of the rising sun above the water is quite exceptional. Great quality enamels. Star is lightly vaulted, complete with original hardware on the reverse. Order was founded in 1926 and modified on several occasions. Later examples were rather poor in quality. Ref. Calvo Pasqual fig.383/1. 75-75mm in diameter. Item # Misc-168  *SOLD*

Spanish Order of Saint Hermenegildo, very old (type 1 - issued after Peninsular/Napoleonic Wars)
Order of Saint Hermenegildo, very old (type 1 - issued after Peninsular/Napoleonic Wars) breast badge. Really nice and early example in gilt (bronze). Centres in silver. Well shaped crown and 'rib' formed wire eyelet. Chipping to the white enamels on the arms (this was normal since badges were proudly worn by the Military in the 'every day life'). Two toned blue enamels of the obverse, very nicely shaped rider/horse. Reverse centre is gilded and features double 'rope' border. Thin, ribbon is tied onto the ring, likely a much later addition. This was most certainly a 'soldier's' cross (since most of those made for the nobility or the high born were crafted in gold). Cross is 27mm wide (this was a proper size used in the period right after the founding of the Order). Item # Sp-84 *Sold*

Spain Military Order of Alcantara - Knight's early breast badge

Military Order of Alcantara - Knight's early breast badge. This very old Order dates back to mid 1100's. In 1499, King Ferdinand II of Aragón persuaded the Pope to assign the administration of the order to him and in the early 16th Century, Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Aragón and Castile, annexed the three great military orders of Alcántara, Calatrava, and Santiago to the Spanish crown. Awards have been mostly as honorary Knights to Royalties and Noblemen of Europe. In 'modern' times awards started around 1814 and were ceased in 1873 under Spanish First Republic. Re-established just a year later in 1874 and abolished by the Second Republic on 29 April 1934. Old insignia are extremely rare. Item offered here dates around mid 1800's. Crafted in silver gilt with fabulous style champleve enamel. Swivelled suspension with seed pearls (11) - 2 are missing. Decorative ribbon eye. Excellent ribbon buckle, oval with floral scrolls - complete with 2 prongs (this style was commonly used on the Napoleonic War period awards). Very fine silk ribbon shows wear. Few superficial scratches on enamel but no chipping. Overall, a most excellent and scarce badge. Unmarked, most likely of Spanish manufacture. Cross is 43mm wide. Would certainly add 'rarity' aspect to any collection. Item # Sp-80 *SOLD*.

The Military Order of Our Lady of Montesa
The Military Order of Our Lady of Montesa. Originally founded by James II, King of Aragon (1291-1327) and approved by Pope John XXII in 1317. The Order was named in honour of Our Lady of Montesa and St. Peter, also to replace the Order of the Templar Knights which was suppressed by Clement V in 1312. Original goals of the Order were to defend Spain from Moors and membership was strictly limited to Catholic nobility. Since, it has undergone many changes. According to Mr. Guy Stair Sainty, in 1931 there were some fifty Knights present. Currently, there are 23 professed Knights and 19 Novice Knights in Spain.
Presented here is a breast badge of a Knight. Complete with original ribbon. Seems to be in silver but unmarked. Great quality enamels on the cross. Arms suspension intact. 32mm x 50mm. Item #Sp-57. *SOLD*
