Sweden, (Grand) Order of the Amaranth. This semi-official (probably better classifed as Fraternal) Order was instituted by Queen Christina in 1653. Originally, it comprised a group of Knights and Ladies of the Royal Court who assembled periodically for gala parties. When Christina abdicated, the Order was dissolved. It was revived in 1760 by wealthy youths who organized a ball for members every other year. The Order is still active. Swedish Royalty are hereditary members, and they still attend the balls of the Order. (Note that Swedish Order is not connected to the Masonic organization of same name in North America.) Offered here is a neck badge of the Order in bronze gilt. Vintage unknown, but judging by quality and ribbon appearance, possibly early 1900's. The Cross is 40mm wide, suspended from 57mm wide neck ribbon with ties. Shows light wear and age, ribbon faded but in great condition. Difficult to find in neck decoration (class unknown). Very interesting and handsome in appearance. Item # Scan11. *SOLD* |
