1877-78 Independence War Commemorative Medal. In this conflict, the newly-created state of Romania successfully defended its fragile independence through participation in the Russo-Turkish War, with some 10,000 Romanian casualties. Consequently, this medal has special significance as one of the first decorations issued by the Romanian nation. At inception in 1878, it was intended only for civilians holding high offices in the army, but later that same year eligibility was extended to some 5,000 officers and lower ranks in the town militias. Die-struck medal in bronze, only traces of original gilding remaining. Beautiful design by E. Falot (marked full name to obverse and initials to reverse). Fitted with incorrect ribbon (should have red-yellow-red borders). Rarely offered medal and in quite good condition. All details still crisp, some age darkening and light scratches. 30mm in diameter. Item #Rom4. (125) |

Kingdom, Medical Merit Decoration 1st class. Founded in 1913, this very attractive award was given for Extraordinary services in the Red Cross during the Balkan War. Also called Queen Elizabeth Cross. Ribbon is a war variation (regular is white with red edge stripes). The first revision of the award occured in 1913 when War decoration was distinguished by the silver wreath pinned to the ribbon. This in term was revised again in 1938 where wreath was no longer attached but 2 gold edge stripes were added to ribbon. So this is a WW2 vintage piece. Condition is great, just some spotty patina. Item # Rom. 12 (145) |
