Kappenabzeichen (cap badges) of the Austro-Hungarian (and associated others) units during WW1

Back to Austrian Medals page / Unit - formation and other abbreviations often found in kappenabzeichen

Overview

Kappenabzeichen were made for every imaginable unit of the K.u.K.(Kaiserlich und Königlich - Imperial and Royal) Austro-Hungarian forces. Some were made for Army, Divisional or Group level, others for Fronts (i.e. Italian Front), Allied units (Turkish etc.) and occasional. Specialty units such Stormtroopers are especially sought after and valuable, hence very often copied.

These cap badges present a unique collecting field, fit for just about any budget or collecting expertise. New enthusiasts along with established collectors will certainly find something suitable in the virtually endless field of the Kappenabzeichen (badges). From the Hungarian Honved and obscure Ukrainian Legion USS, through Polish Legions or the popular Christmas in the Field (Weihnachten im Feld) there will be something appealing to most WW1 collectors.

Quality ranges from very poor (thin war metal or zinc) to good in tombak (or French spellin of 'Tombac') and excellent in silver/gold and enamels. Maker marks are common, but perfectly original badges are often unmarked.

Referenced numbers are from HD Rauch old auction catalogues of kappenabzeichen.

1916/17 Karst Front kappenabzeichen
NEW! 1916/17 Karst Front. The 'Karst' region today is across the border of the southwestern Slovenia and northeastern Italy. The many of the Isonzo river skirmishes took place in and around the Karst plateau, seeing very bitter hand to hand fighting in the most difficult of terrain. Original badge in white metal, marked by: ARKANZAS.BP. 42mm x 35mm. Shows wear and age but still in good condition. Original pin assembly. Item # Kap-64 (145)

1915 Relief of Lwow (Lwów/Lviv).
1915 Relief of Lwow (Lwów/Lviv). City was occupied by the Russian forces at the beginning of the War. On June 22nd, K.u.K forces entered the ravaged city (by retreating Russian troops) to a considerate rejoicing of the Polish/Ukrainian population. There were 3 types of a commemorative badge struck by the Polish government of the city and first/second types are extraordinarily rare, while 3rd type is hard to find. Presented here is cap badge for the K.u.K and allied units taking part in the liberation of the city. Zinc, considerably good condition. Original hardware intact. 52.5mm x 31mm. Manufacturer marked: 'Brüder Schneider, Wien 5'. Badge is far from common and likely of interest to Polish collectors. Item # Kap-63

6 Schützen-Wachbataillon Arditi K.u.K badge abzeichen
SWB/6 - 6 Schützen-Wachbataillon. According to our research, these rare units were battlefront-raised from members of other units, especially at the Italian Front and guarded important military points (command posts, vital communication/supply lines etc.). Purportedly, as stealthy actions of the infamed Italian ARDITI became quite a manace to the Austro-Hungarian command - designated watch-battalions were organized and comprised of the best-skilled patrolmen in the k.u.K army. Units were few and organized for short periods, thus not being an actual assigned part of the 'permanent' K.u.K Army structure. Probably best described as 'occasional' units or such. Badge in silvered tombak, very nice cut-out pattern of letters/number. Manufacturer's full markings on reverse: 'Abz. Atel. F.L. PRAMER, Nussdorferstrasse, Wien IX. Badge meant to be stitched on (no pins etc.). Equally rare to the very popular Sturmbaon's badges but much harder to find (raised units were purportedly small). 45mm x 26mm. Worn but very good condition. Of interest to Italian collectors as well (the Arditi connection). Item # Kap- 60. *SOLD*

A bit of search revealed that he was a commanding officer of the 7th Uhlans during WW1! Really neat piece, would make splendid addition to any serious Kappenabzeichen collection. 36mm x 18.5mm. 155 Stormtroop (Sturmtruppe) Sturmbattaillon Handgranatenwerferer' badge in tombak. 155 Assault Tropp was one of the elite Hungarian units
155 Stormtroop (Sturmtruppe) Sturmbattaillon Handgranatenwerferer' badge in tombak. 155 Assault Tropp was one of the elite Hungarian units. As a premise, units had 10 man and 1 commanding officer but it is very hard to determine if these numbers were always so miniscule. Similar to the famed Italian 'Arditi' , k.u.k sturmtuppen received very good training in close combat, granate throwing, flame thrower operation, shooting etc. Badge bearing maker mark to lower right corner: 'LOTZ'. Details are very good and crisp. Complete with catch pin fastener. Shows age and some darkening. Such badges were made with a discretion from unit's commanding officers from 1917 on since Austrian High Command and War Ministry could not agree or decide what (and if any) insignia the elite stormtroopers were to wear. It is probably safe to believe the notion that war-time badges along with post war commemorative ones do exist. In any case, all are considered rare. Excellent example. 33mm x 37.5mm. Item # Kap-28 *SOLD*
