Commemorative medal for liberation of Siebenbürgen (Transylvania). Medal was instituted on 1 October 1940. The obverse has the bust of King Matthias Corvinus (1458-1490). Reverse showing arms of Transylvania with various names around the rim: 'Vitez, Nagybanyai, Horthy, Miklos, Kormanyzo, Orszaglasanak, XX, Eveben and others. These medals were made in so called 'War metal'. Example offered here is in good condition. Details are still 'crisp' and readable. Early issue with slightly convex reverse. WW1 Hungarian Wounded badge. There were 2 sizes available, one offered here is of the larger type (22mm x 28.5mm). Badge was approved by Admiral Horthy in 1931 and worn on the left breast pocket. Letters HR are an acronym for the word: 'Hadirokkant' (meaning 'War Invalid'). Badge in remarkable condition. Lapel fastener intact. Gilded tombac, slight wear and traces of verdigris. Cross of Merit / Order of Merit - 1922 Silver Medal of Merit. This was the higher of the 2 medal grades which existed with both decorations: Cross of Merit (1922/23-1935) and the Order of Merit (1935-1945). Medal of excellent quality, struck in silver (tested) although unmarked. Condition is near mint! Original ribbon. Front line Fighters Assoctiation badge - WW2 (Magyar Frontharcos Szövetség). Starting at the end of WW1 there are 5 known types of those badges. Four are for WW1 and only the 5th being for WW2. Great War badges featured the Austrian 'troop cross' in the background where as 2nd WW examples use the Hungarian 'Fire-cross'. There is also variant with no cross whatsoever but that was worn by members who did not see any combat. Such badges came in 2 sizes and were worn in left lapel of uniform (large badge) and same location of civilian jacket (small badge). Offered here is the WW2 large version by Berán N. of Budapest (mark visible to reverse). According to our reference material - this was one of the least encountered versions and with very limited time of production. Appears to be bronze, green/black enamels (slight cracking under left arm of the cross), helmet/sword being separate part. Reverse shows some old solder work - we are not certain if fastener is original. 27mm x 16.8mm. Rare badge (note that 1st War types are considerably easier to find but far from common). Order of Vitéz (Knightly Order for bravery or Valiant), Vitézi Rend. Military division. It was the first Hungarian decoration/order established (1920) during Regency. It was awarded to officers and enlisted men of the Imperial Army for heroic deeds during WW1. Along with the award came title 'Knight' and an estate (land). Offered here is example by: 'BOCZAN GY. BUDAPEST VII RAKOCZI UT 6' (impressed to a folding prong fastener on reverse). Superb quality, few minor chips but not detractive. Beautifully vaulted badge. 3 part construction, silver sword attached through the National shield to the main body via 2 fold-wires. No signs of alterations. 58mm x 39.5mm. Hungarian Corvin Medal (Magyar Gorvin-Erem). This was the lowest rank of the coveted Corvin Decoration which was reserved for Hungarian Nobility only. Named after Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary (1458-1490). During early 1900's awarding of medal were to be extended to most notable scientists and artist but only a few were actually made. There is not a lot of information about actual distribution of the medal. Higher classes are of utmost rarity (Corvin collar, Corvin with wreath, Corvin badge). Beautifully crafted in silver (unmarked). Original ribbon. Obverse inscription: 'Mathias Rex Hungariae', reverse inscribed: 'Animus Regis Regna Nobilitat Et Obscurat'. Claw suspension. Die struck. Royal Hungarian Air Force officer's belt buckle. Early WW2 vintage. These are extremely hard to find, as are all Hungarian insignia of the era. Two piece construction, backplate attached to frame with 4 rivets. Only traces of original gilding remaining. Back stamped by maker: 'Meszaros Lajos, Budapest Maria U 15'. Originally there was black ribbon between the frame and backing but it is all gone. Shows age and wear, loop missing but catch still intact. Great piece for any European WW2 aviation collection. Cross of Merit/Order of Merit - silver medal of merit. This was the higher grade of the lowest class of this Order. Medals of merit existed with both decorations: Cross of Merit (1922/23-1935) and the Order of Merit (1935-1945). Presented here is a rare medal in hallmarked silver; most were made in bronze with silver plating. Because of the War ribbon (red), it is safe to assume it dates from the early days of the WW2. According to our research, there were only 367 awards of this class (with War ribbon) during WW2 making it relatively scarce. Finding one so thoroughly hallmarked adds to its attractiveness. 39mm in diameter, shows wear, especially around rim and one scratch to reverse. Overall in good or better condition. Original ribbon, hook/eyelet ribbon assembly showing rusty spots. Details are much better than the bronze (silver plated) medals. Would make for a wonderful addition to your collection. Many Hungarian soldiers fought within Waffen-SS foreign ranks. War merit cross was awarded for combat actions, hence it may be regarded as Waffen-SS award; the Hungarian domestic army did not see much combat on its own during those years.
