Air France, early vintage cap badge with the winged sea horse
Air France, early vintage cap badge with the winged sea horse logo (a.k.a "shrimp"). Gold bullion embroidery on the black felt and white canvas backing. Shows wear and age, some fading to gilt and few pulls to threads. This is a fairly scarce badge, worn on the peaked caps of the Pilot/1st officer. 60mm x 53mm. Air France was result of a merger amongst many lesser lines, most notable being Air Orient - back in 1933. Winged sea horse was Air Orient's logo for a short time prior to merger and featured letters 'A O' to the left and right of the wing. We know of at least 4 patterns of the design and this item conforms to the original Air France examples (pattern 2 omitted the vertical line in the wing of the seahorse), also - 'wings' in the wreath were added slightly later on these badges. External Resources
For some who finish their service flying in the military, a natural continuation of their skills can be joining the friendly skies of commercial aviation. Logging hundreds of hours of cheap flights from Canada to other parts of the world and back can be a rewarding experience. Being a commercial pilot is also a great way to see other cities and countries that for a lot of people seem out of reach.
