Edith Cavell, Marie Depage Medal - 1915 - N'OUBLIONS JAMAIS'

Edith Cavell, Marie Depage Medal - 1915 - N'OUBLIONS JAMAIS' -. Edith Cavell should need no introduction, being one of the most recognized women martyrs of the WW1. Marie Depage was aboard RMS Lusitania when it was sunk; she was en route to work with Cavell in Europe.

Designed by Armand Bonnetain in 1919. Large, non wearable bronze medals were commissioned by the Belgian school for graduate nurses (Commission de l’Ecole belge d’infirmières diplômées). Those were made by the known firm of Fonson & Cie.

This smaller, wearable version appears to be very rare and the only mention we found of this is in the collections of the Imperial War Museum (and there is no image there). This smaller medal differs from the non wearable by the reverse which reads: "1915 - N'OUBLIONS JAMAIS' -". The large medal has the following: "1915 - REMEMBER -".

Having researched this for long time, the only other mention of this small medal we found is from the archives of the Royal London Hospital. Again, there are no images but the entry reads that such medal was awarded to the nurses at the end of the 2nd year of studies, at the Institut of Edith Cavell and Marie Depage. They also mention 3 year badge which we know is much earlier vintage so their entries might not be entirely correct.

This medal comes with beautiful ribbon, bow arranged and with pin. 28mm in diameter. No maker marks, only designer: A.Bonnetain 1919. Very nice condition, lovely patina. Should be classifed as rare. Item # Rdc-145. *SOLD*

Abbysinian Campaign Medal Belgian Defense of the Congo

Commemorative Medal of the Ethiopian Campaign with ‘Abyssinie’ bar. RARE. The medal was instituted in 1947 and awarded to combatants in Ethiopia between 6 March and 3 July 1941. On 11 March 1941, Belgian forces, together with elements of the British King’s African Rifles attacked Asosa, defeating the occupying Italians before moving on to Gambela and Saio. Medal in very good condition, signed 'DUPAGNE'. On original ribbon, somewhat faded. A rare award, with no more than 3,000 eligible combatants and possibly fewer than 500 actually awarded. (Reportedly, only a fraction of the African combatants received their awards.) Beware: Forgeries of this medal and of the "Abyssinie" bar have been spotted on the market. Item #Bel-104. (278)

Leopold I Order, Knight with swords - period shortly after founding of the order (1832) to award military participants of the 1831 Revolution (against the Dutch). Very fine example by the first official manufacturer of the insignia - J.G.Dutalis in Brussel

Leopold I Order, Knight with swords - period shortly after founding of the order (1832) to award military participants of the 1831 Revolution (against the Dutch). Very fine example by the first official manufacturer of the insignia - J.G.Dutalis in Brussels. This original type features the so called "Spanish" crown (even though it has nothing to do with Spain or their decorations). We prefer to call this the 'Dutalis' type crown; in fact the design was most likely influenced by the crowns used in the Order of Bath (English). Some early examples made in France also show this crown style. Cross can be safely dated to the 1832 - early 1840s manufacturing period (even though Dutalis lost the official contract in 1835, we believe that lesser class production still took place for some time). Judging by the centres, it is (in our opinion) probably the '2nd' variant manufactured by J.G.Dutalis; however, it is not possible to narrow it down further - to the particular period within this short time-frame. Hallmark of the 1831 regulation for silver (sword) visible on the left side of the wreath ties, manufacturer's mark (Dutalis) is struck on the right side - it is a stylised letter 'D' and is partial on this example, yet very clear. Cross has professional restoratory work done on some of the arms (typically damaged areas). Some flaking to the red ribbands otherwise condition is very good (compared to known examples). Silver frame/crown, gold centres. Beautiful crown details, proper and original ribbed suspension eye. Ribbon is original and of excellent quality/condition! Cross in full size (38mm wide). Good opportunity to own a piece of Belgian 'history'. Most were issued to Belgians and the French. Item # Bel-100 *SOLD*

Belgique Order of Leopold I, early Knight class in civil Division. Very nice example manufactured by C.J.Buls in Brussels

Order of Leopold I, early Knight class in civil Division. Very nice example manufactured by C.J.Buls in Brussels. This firm was the 3rd official Belgian manufacturer of the order and used 2 particular crown designs on their Officer/Knight class of the order. The first form which was fairly round in appearance is believed to have been in usage around 1839-1845; likely as result of die breakage - new style was devised and is commonly addressed as "gonflé" type. We prefer to simply call it 'Buls type 2' crown. Other than the crown, there are several interesting variations on Buls's crosses - especially the appearance of the lion in the centres. Many forms are known and we believe that crowned lions belong in the earliest period of firm's production line. Presence of well detailed manufacturer's mark would likely indicate earlier vintage of the production also. This example has en exceptionally well detailed mark (B with wreath beneath), struck to both, the wreath ties and the suspension eyelet. Silver hallmark also clearly impressed on the ties. This hallmark was no longer used after 1869 yet occasionally seen on later crosses (since couple of other firms purchased Buls's remaining blanks circa 1885). None of those post 1885 crosses should (in theory) bear the mark of the manufacturer and the lions become quite rough in appearance (often very flat and featureless). It would be safe to date this particular cross around 1845-1850's. Condition is exceptional, just a few minor chips to the tips of the cross. Beautiful patina is evident. Complete with short length of original ribbon. Cross measures 40mm in width. It would prove hard to find better example of this type/period. Item # Bel-99 (215)

1871 Belgian Red Cross, Cross of Recognition 1st class

Little is known about the award or the numbers issued. Came in 2 classes (ribbon with or without rosette). A slight chip to white enamel on the left arm (close to the centre shield with the white/red enamel). Original ribbon with rosette is rare and it shows age/wear. Cross is in silver and it is slightly vaulted, measuring 41mm across. Overall condition is good for this super rare award. Item # Bel-98 *SOLD*

Belgium Order of Leopold I, Knight with swords (Military Division)
Order of Leopold I, Knight with swords (Military Division). Very nice example, typical of the Fernand Heremans production, likely awarded right after WW1. Even though such short swords were frowned upon by the Chancery after the first decade of the 20th century, this manufacturer continued to produce the short version for several years. Very nice example, excellent patina. Made in silver with gilt centres. Condition is remarkable (such crosses are normally prone to the enamel chipping). Crown is of the cut-out top part type which is similar to the earlier work by J.Heremans (Fernand`s brother). Complete with original ribbon and `U` type stick pin fastener. Belgian 1914-1916 African Campaigns commemorative medal in silver (for Europeans). 1st type.

1914-1916 African Campaigns commemorative medal in silver (for Europeans). 1st type. This relatively scarce medal was issued to participants of the many battles between Belgian/Allied forces and the Germans for the control of the German colonies in Africa. Starting in Belgian Congo, attacks were launched on the German East Africa (Rwanda/Burundi/Tanzania), also Cameroon and parts of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) along with Congo itself.  Medal was issued mainly to Belgians, British and the French. Some sources list others (Portuguese, South Africans) as well. Offered here is an excellent original example in silver. Medals were made in France and all (silver) originals should bear the French silver mark (wild boar head). There are copies on the market bearing no or faint mark. Maker's mark is also present - struck to the eyelet. It clearly shows letters 'P L' with lightning bolt between them. This was a registered mark of the French jeweler/medallier Paul Leclére. Ribbon is original, faded to obverse side. Some thread separation at the top (visible on the back side where the 'u' type pin fastener is attached. Medal shows nice patina, details are crisp and there is no damage. 30.5mm in diameter, planchet is 2.2mm thick. Excellent and all original example. Item # Bel-80 *SOLD*

Rare officer cap badge of Compagnie Belge Maritime du Congo (Belgian Maritime Company of Congo)
Rare officer cap badge of Compagnie Belge Maritime du Congo (Belgian Maritime Company of Congo). This shipping company dates back to 1895. King Leopold II (with considerable British influence) established CBMC in order to provide a regular shipping service to Congo. On 6 February 1895 the passenger liner Léopoldville (I) was the first ship to leave Antwerp under Belgian flag. Until 1930, activities were limited to shipping service to Congo, carrying passengers, cargo and mail. In 1930 CBMC absorbed the Belgian shipowner Lloyd Royal Belge. The company name was changed into Compagnie Maritime Belge and the first additional lines to North and South America and the Far East were started. In the Second World War CMB lost three quarters of its fleet aiding War effort.
Badge dating is difficult but most likely circa early 1900's. Floral wreath in metal bullion, considerable amount of verdigris throughout. Copper (or bronze) badge with all enamels intact, affixed to body with 2 folding prongs. Black cloth bacground, white canvas and paper backing. Thickly padded. Shows wear and age. All early shipping insignia are hard to find. Overall 66mm x 46mm. Most interesting and original badge. Item #Bel-66 *SOLD*

WWI Yser Cross
WWI Yser Cross. This early campaign saw nearly 1/3 of all the Belgian army killed or wounded by advancing Germans. Fights took place along river Yser. Some 60 000 men were casualties. Although the Cross replaced the Yser medal, it is much harder to find; in fact it is quite scarce as one had to apply for this issue and few bothered. Yser was one of more important battles of the Great War. Very attractive in design. Wounded lion on a battlefield with Yser below and royal cypher with crown (within green enamel) atop. Reverse of naked soldier with staff, date 17-31 Oct 1914, green enamelled YSER atop. Cross in bronze, good heavy quality. Designer marked to obverse. Scarce piece. 43mm wide. Item #Bel-53. *SOLD*

WW1 Croix de Guerre. Cross in bronze with unusual finish to arms (almost like intricate pattern as opposed to usual pebble dots). Bronze palm and lion device to ribbon. The latter is hard to find. Letter 'A' for King Albert to palm. The little lion device was issued for citation in the Order of the Day on a regiment level. It has been downgraded from the citation on Army level (to that of regiment level) in 1917 though. For some reason these are hard to find. So the recipient of this cross had one Army level and one Regimental level citation. All original including ribbon. Shows bit of wear, no damage. Item # Bel-17. *SOLD*
